This is Tina and Valet!

Hello!

My name is Tina, Im 19 years old and come from Stockholm in Sweden where I live with my mother. Last year I graduated from high school and since my graduation I have been working, in a shop and at an office, and now I am here in exciting Thailand which I will miss so much! My hobbies are dancing, photographing, to sit for ours at Coffey shops and relax and talk with my friends and take long walks ? I miss that a lot because I can not do here in Thailand because of all crazy dogs!

My counterpart is Valet, he is 21 years old. He comes from Prachuakhirikhan province (I will never learn that name!) ? Its in southern of Thailand where he lives with his parents and two younger brothers. He has studied law at Ramkhamhaeng University. He likes to play football and play guitar and eat spicy food (he think he will miss Thai food a lot). He also think it will be very interesting to go to Sweden and learn more about how Swedish communities work.

Here in Dansai we live in a very big hostfamily, together we are 9 people! They are very kind and they take very good care of us! It will be hard to leave them soon :(? But the both of us look foreward to go to Sweden very much, but Valet is a little disappointed that he probably will not see snow... The ?second most? he would like to see a moose, so I hope for a moose to show up then? ;)

Now we want to enjoy our last week here in Dansai!
See you soon!

Prestentation of Joy and Maria!!

Hello, my name is Maria Johansson and it is now exactly two weeks left here in Thailand, before we go to Sweden. I am 19 years old and graduated from the upper secondary school last spring. I come from Gellivare in the north of Sweden, which is a quit small community with a beautiful nature! After I graduated and before I went on this exchange I have worked and traveled. On my sparetime I like to be with my friends and be out in the nature, take walks, and sometimes go fishing and hunting.
And now I want to intoduce my thai country part; Mutita "Joy" Kanpakdee, who is 24 years old and come from the Nakhonsawan province, which is about 3-4 hours with bus from Bangkok. She lives there with here mother, father, older sister and grandparents. Just before she went on this youth exchange, she graduated with a major degree in marketing studies from the Ramkhomhang University in Bangkok. On her sparetime she also like being out in the nature, but also listen to music and she cook very good thai food (I know:D)!!!
That was a short intoduction of me and Joy, and I can also say that we enjoy living with our hostfamily (Mother Noi, Father Si and the 11 and 12 years old boys Spy and Sprite) here very much, they are very nice to us!!
Even if we both will miss our hostfamily here in thailand we are looking forward to the Swedish part of the exchange and to meet our new hostfamily in Sweden!!

That was all for now!!

So much to do, so little time?

So now we have spent the majority of our time here in Thailand and it is much that we understand better and much that we do not understand, for example like time in Thailand is something else than in Sweden. We are constantly busy but very seldom we know with what before. A schedule never works; a half hour can be everything in between 10 minutes to three hours. We never know, but we have started to get used to it. So for about three weeks I have had the plan to update the blogg about what we are doing and it is always something that come up that I suddenly have to do instead of my plan to write. But now I take my time to inform you all about what we are doing.

We live as most of you know in Dansai, a little town in northeastern Thailand. A traditional city so we have learned much about tradition, respect and Buddhism and spirits. A challenge for us all too suddenly change our way of moving and sitting to not offend.

We have hade several EAD (Educational Activity Day); we have learnt about sustainable entrepreneurship, how to make and sell Thai snacks, weaving and producing natural dyed cotton cloths, about a rubber three plantation, learnt thaicooking, learnt how to make Phi Ta Khon masks (their ghostfestival). We will soon learn about making flower arrangements and to make Phi Ta Khon bags. Most of our EAD:s have meant that we have visited and worked with OTOP-groups and learnt about how they got the idea and how they made it reality.

What else have we done then? we have visited a cottonfesitival, a forest protection area, a teak plantation, learnt Thai dancing (and taught the Thai participants to dance bugg), visited the spiritual leader of Dansais house and learnt about Dansai culture and so much more. This weekend we will go and hike in a national park for relax after all the work.

But this is not all; the participants have also spent two days a week at their workplacement. They have changed workplacements two times during the exchange to learn more. But so far they have worked at two schools, a hospital, a temple, a OTOP-group, a OTOP shop and the municipality.

They have also worked with their projects. We have now three projects that all have come a long way even if they just started less then a month ago. The first project is the sugerproject that try to inform about sugars negative effects thou diabetes is a big problem here. They will also sell fruitsallad at the market to give a good alternative and in the same time inform about sugars negative sides. The second project will work with a handicap group at the hospital that makes naturalsoap and improve their brand and try to get people in Dansai to choose a locally produced product that is good for the environment. They profit will go to the handicapped that make a living through this production. The third project has produced a cotton shopping bag that can replace all plasticbags that today are used at the markets in Dansai. They work with an OTOP-group and try to make people aware about the environmental problem with using plasticbags. They have all come a long way and now the try to make the projects last when we leave for Sweden.

So much to do in little time? But as their PF (project facilitator/ handledare) I can only say that I am very proud about their hard work and willingness to learn!
Soon we will come to Sweden and we have short time left to fulfill all our projects but we will make it! As our motto: WE CAN DO IT!

Regards,

Jessika Karreskog, project facilitator for SWY Thailand-Gotene 2008
